Appeal to the Global Press for Use of Video Footage Shot in Tibet and East Turkestan
April 15, 2008
To whom it may concern,
My name is Morley Robertson, an American radio journalist working in Japan. I would like to make high-definition video footage of East Turkestan (also called "Xinjiang") and Tibet from 2007 available to the world press, in the interest of shedding light on more details of the current situation.
At the moment, I am appealing to show footage of the Dalai Lama's birthplace, which can be found in digest form at the following URL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73kZk3uKsRg
Chinese authorities have recently sealed off this building from the general public as well as reporters. The Dalai Lama's relatives are reportedly under house arrest. This building was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution once, and later reconstructed. It risks being destroyed again. The Dalai Lama's relatives are also at risk.
By broadcasting these images, I feel that the world can send China a message that it is watching how China handles the Tibetan crisis. Bullying tactics such as destroying monuments, birthplaces, harassing or harming family members will not win over support from the international community.
I also have a 20 minute long sequence of ethnic Uyghur farmers, being forced to labor without pay, protesting their situation. The farmers speak at length about the methods used by local Chinese authorities to systematically force them into bankruptcy. These include raising water prices, forcefully renting agricultural machinery at inflated prices, forcing farmers to grow watermelons on land suited for cotton, and so on. The Uyghur farmers were courageous enough to speak into a video camera, as long as local security forces were not in sight. They risked their lives to speak on camera. Although this video was shot last year, in March, 2007, the validity of their claims remain current. Though I originally kept this video out of public view in the interest of the farmer's safety, I feel that now is the time to publicize information about their situation.
As the crisis in Tibet and East Turkestan evolves rapidly into genocidal proportions, I am making an active effort to provide the international media with what documentation I have available. Please consider broadcasting this video footage in channels available to you.
